Pile Gate, Dubrovnik

4.3
Cross the stone bridge to Pile Gate, a grand entrance on the western wall of the city's Old Town. Below the bridge, notice the green space that once served as the city trench. Renaissance arches outflank the outer and inner gates. See the two statues of St. Blaise, the city's patron saint. The interior statue is the work of the well-known 20th-century Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Next to it, look for the old door, dating back to 1460. During the republican era, the city pulled up the drawbridge each night. Now, the gates of Dubrovnik are always open to visitors. • It is one of 3 entrances to the old town. Interesting to see how it worked. In July and August can be very crowded.  more »

  • One of the medieval gates to the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. For me it was a gateway to 3 exciting things...Beauty, History and Game of Thrones! The design of the gate was meant to allow a very controlled entrance and egress to and from Dubrovnik and it's my guess, since it's still there and until modern weaponry it worked pretty well. Once through an ancient but modern world opens up to the visitor. I suggest you should plan be one.
  • Pile gate is one entrance for the old town of Dubrovnik. From there you enter to the old town and you can walk all over the city and pay a visit to some of the sightseeing of the town. The gate is very old and is made by stones, rocks and wood. Many people enter from this gate every day and visit the old town of Dubrovnik. If you follow the path - road then you will arrive to one of the main squares of Dubrovnik. From there it's very easy to walk around the city and visit even more sightseeing.
