Nicholas Quarter, Berlin

4.1
A reconstructed historic center, Nicholas Quarter of Alt-Berlin was founded in 1200. The two most well-known buildings are the Nicholas Church and the Ephraim-Palais. The latter was built for King Frederick II of Prussia's financier, Veital-Heine Ephraim. The palace was renovated in the 1980s, when it was opened to the public as a museum. Another nearby museum, the Biedermeier civic museum, is housed inside the Knoblauchhaus buildings with the Neoclassic facade. The area around these historic structures is interspersed with traditional restaurants and bars that serve up beer with a side of sauerkraut. The former prince-elector's house rests on the shores of the Spree river. Elector Eduard Knoblauch believed a white lady haunted the house, so he fled to his valet's house.
