The Museum of Asian Art of Corfu is a museum in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu, Greece. The only museum in Greece dedicated to the art of Asia, it has collections of Chinese art, Japanese art, Indian art and others.HistoryThe museum opened in 1927 as the Museum of Sino-Japanese art with the donation of the Gregorios Manos collection. A Greek ambassador to Austria, Manos (1850-1928) had purchased approximately Chinese, Korean and Japanese artefacts at art auctions in Vienna and Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century. He compiled, recorded and catalogued his collection himself, with nearly scientific consistency, and is regarded as the first Greek authority on Far Eastern art. In 1919, he donated his collection to the Greek State, on the condition that a Sino-Japanese art museum be opened in Corfu. The second donation was the collection of N. Chatzivasileiou, the former Greek ambassador to India and Japan, with artefacts from India, Pakistan, Tibet, Siam and Northeast Asia. This donation changed the previously mainly Sino-Japanese focus of the museum, resulting in its renaming into Museum of Asian Art. The third major donation was from Ch. Chiotakis, a Greek merchant in the Netherlands. Smaller noteworthy donations came from Petros Almanachos, Iordanis Siniosoglou and Giannis Kollas.MuseumThe collection contains some eleven thousand objects, the oldest from the 11th century BC. Artistic collections include Japanese printed pictures, Chinese porcelain, and Indian sculptures in bronze and other materials plus wood carvings. Some of the wood and bronze items are of superb quality and depict gods and goddesses engaged in erotic scenes. The museum is set in the well-preserved rooms of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, built during the British rule, with ornate furniture and decorations from that period.

  • It is housed in the beautiful neoclassical palace of St Michael and St George of 1819. It houses an extensive collection of some of the most important works of Asian art in Europe. Thousands of pieces from private collections of diplomats, original works from China,Japan,Korea and other countries. Spectacular porcelain and Chinese works from 1500 BC with remarkable finds of ming dynasty. Time demands, but even a quick and superficial visit remains satisfied.

  • The palace itself is charming, and it actually has a tasty tour of different cultures in Asia, each through the media that characterizes it: the Indian deities and the like of the temples in the Qajar. Turkish carpets, Chinese porcelain and the centerpiece of the culture of Japan. The latter contains diverse and fascinating details, from the germanium of court-clad, decorated with impressive ivory and silk and war-warers and Swords of Samurai warriors (and fighters knives...). The explanations are friendly and focused and enable you to gain perspective on cultural characteristics that have grown in Asia in different places during those time periods. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The day we arrived, the souvenir shop was closed. And when they saw us, they gave us the choice of a beautiful poster from an exhibition that was about to open. Nice place for a two-hour tour.

  • Strangely but this museum in Corfu has better collection of orient art that some big and famous museums. Also the building itself (a palace actually) is quite important historically and just dazzling. So do not skip it if you in Corfu town!
  • A really lovely experience. The building is cool, grand and feels very relaxed inside and the exhibition takes you through the spiritual and artistic history of China, India and Japan. Interesting and inspiring.
