Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, Rhodes Town

4.4
Part of Rhodes' world-famous medieval old town, Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes exists as one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. Built by the Knights of Saint John, a Christian military order which controlled Rhodes from 1309 until 1522, the imposing palace features fairy-tale towers, ramparts, and more than 150 rooms. Remarkably undamaged during the Ottoman siege of the island in the 16th century, the palace suffered massive damage in 1856 when a nearby ammunition storage site exploded. Restored by Italian architect Vittorio Mesturino in the 1930s, the palace then served as a vacation home for dictator Benito Mussolini. Today the palace houses a museum noted for displaying well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floors. • Well worth a visit when visiting the old town, can buy a combined ticket for other attractions. Interesting artefacts, knowledgable staff on hand.  more »
  • The palace is impressive. You can buy a ticket to the archaeological museum and Castle. This is a good option. We get here going from the port side of the Knight's street, or vice versa from the defensive walls we have the castle, and down leads Knight. A beautiful place to visit in Rhodes

  • Such an amazing palace with so much history. It has all been very well preserved, even if it is only an Italian rebuild. The architecture is unlike anything I have ever seen. The collection of relics from the region is impressive. Definitely worth a visit, although I would recommend doing a little research so you know what you are looking at. I agree with some of the other reviews that there is not a lot of explanation as you are walking through the palace, however a lot of it speaks for itself.
  • I had three wonderful days inside the castle. All historical and protected. There are many museums and amazing spots you can feel the atmosphere. The whole old city is surrounded by the walls and it is bigger than the black castle:)
