Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, Rhodes Town

4.4
Part of Rhodes' world-famous medieval old town, Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes exists as one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. Built by the Knights of Saint John, a Christian military order which controlled Rhodes from 1309 until 1522, the imposing palace features fairy-tale towers, ramparts, and more than 150 rooms. Remarkably undamaged during the Ottoman siege of the island in the 16th century, the palace suffered massive damage in 1856 when a nearby ammunition storage site exploded. Restored by Italian architect Vittorio Mesturino in the 1930s, the palace then served as a vacation home for dictator Benito Mussolini. Today the palace houses a museum noted for displaying well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floors.
