Standing 40 m (130 ft) above the Roman Forum, Monte Palatino represents one of the Seven Hills of Rome and one of the oldest parts of the city. According to legend, Romulus founded Rome here in 754 BCE. Walk among the ruins of the buildings where Roman emperors and other aristocrats resided, and view the gardens that still remain. Look down upon Circus Maximus, the Roman Forum, and the Coliseum below. Stop by the Palatine Museum to see ancient artifacts and displays from the Iron Age. Tennis or hiking shoes are most suitable for exploring the grounds due to the uneven footing. Palatian Hill is the birthplace of the Roman Empire. The deep antiquity of the hill is proved by numerous archaeological finds: traces of the first settlement on Palatine date back to about 1000 BC the appearance of Palatine Hill under Emperor Octavian Augustus, which was born on this hill and chose it as his residence. All subsequent Roman emperors also began to live on Palatine. Each of them built his own palace here. On Palatine Hill you can see the ruins of the palace of Tiberius, Nero, Flavia.View original
