Castell de Bellver, Palma de Mallorca

4.3
#1 of 60 in Museums in Majorca
A circular-shaped castle built with a dual purpose, Castell de Bellver was once the royal seat of James II of Mallorca. The central courtyard surrounds a well that leads to a water-storing cistern below the castle's foundations. The impenetrable walls also once served as a military prison after James II's reign, but nowadays the distinctive architecture attracts visitors from all over the world. The island's history museum resides inside the castle. • The castle itself is quickly seen, maybe an hour or so. Exciting to see fortifications and think about how in bad times have been able to baricate themselves against unrest. The castle's inner exhibition has a brief chronological review of Palma's development from the first settlements. The top offers views of Palma and the bay.

  • the castle offers fabulous views over the bay of Palma de Mallorca. It is an excellent castle of circular plan, of the few in the world with this characteristic, which is really well preserved. On Sundays admission is free.

  • First of all. Ticket price is very well priced. €4 is a bargain for a lovely setting to walk around. Unfortunately, they were setting up some sort of event while we were there so we weren't able to get an unobstructed view of the interior. The castle itself is rather small but has such an interesting design, and uses the empty rooms to good effect by turning them into a museum which has curated a number of historical artifacts, meaning you can take your time and learn about the place as well. Knowing Spanish will be handy here. The views from the top are spectacular but not great for someone afraid of heights. I was a tad anxious but people without this fear will enjoy the views immensely. Lovely slice of history for a decent price.
  • This was an interesting stop. There were lots of neat rooms with information and a beautiful view from the top. The cafe by the tickets counter was also just what we needed before and after. Before for coffee, and after for water. Bring sunscreen!
