Once the most important harbor in the Mediterranean Sea, Genoa has a long history as a rich and powerful trade center in northern Italy.
Venture out of the city with trips to Baia del Silenzio (in Sestri Levante), Santa Margherita Ligure (in Santa Margherita Ligure) and Camogli (Abbazia di San Fruttuoso & Oratorio di San Prospero e Santa Caterina). There's still lots to do: get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Aquarium of Genoa, see the interesting displays at Galata Museo del Mare, enjoy breathtaking views from Spianata Castelletto, and get to know the fascinating history of Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi a Nervi.

Traveling by train from Genoa to Cinque Terre takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Genoa in May, plan for a bit cooler nights in Cinque Terre, with lows around 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Wed) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Porto Venere.

Start off your visit on the 4th (Thu): look for gifts at Le Mie Sete - Atelier Artistico Artigianale, then pause for some serene contemplation at San Pietro Church, then make a trip to Santuario della Madonna Bianca (Chiesa di San Lorenzo), and finally wander the streets of Portovenere. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: make a trip to Palazzata a Mare, don't miss a visit to Piscina Naturale Portovenere E Palmaria, and then head off the coast to Isola Palmaria.
