National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff

4.2

The National Assembly for Wales (Welsh: Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru; commonly known as the Welsh Assembly or Senedd) is the devolved parliament of Wales, with power to make legislation, vary taxes and scrutinise the Welsh Government. The Assembly comprises 60 members, who are known as Assembly Members, or AMs (Aelodau y Cynulliad). Since 2011, Members are elected for five-year terms under an additional members system, in which 40 AMs represent geographical constituencies elected by the plurality system, and 20 AMs represent five electoral regions using the D'Hondt method of proportional representation. Typically the largest party in the Assembly forms the Welsh Government.

The Assembly was created by the Government of Wales Act 1998, which followed a referendum in 1997. The Assembly had no powers to initiate primary legislation until limited law-making powers were gained through the Government of Wales Act 2006. Its primary law-making powers were enhanced following a Yes vote in the referendum on 3 March 2011, making it possible for it to legislate without having to consult the UK parliament or the Secretary of State for Wales in the 20 areas that are devolved.

Devolved areas include health, education, economic development, transport, the environment, agriculture, local government and some taxes.

Legislation has been passed by the assembly which will change the name of the institution from National Assembly for Wales to the Welsh Parliament in English and Senedd Cymru (Welsh: [ˈsɛnɛð]) in Welsh. The name change is expected to come into effect on 6 May 2020.

  • By far my favourite building in the world. It’s sustainable, attractive, and the staff are great. I wish the opening times were longer and a bit more transparent.  more »

  • Quite impressed with old style mixing with new. Nice exhibitions being held whilst I was there and also some very interesting history to read up on. People also very helpful, give it a try when your next in the bay.
  • The building is very nice! But the way it is managed is confusing! You can visit the place freely and there is a guided tour at 11h, but when you get to the entrance, the security behaves like if they just don’t understand why you entering the place. The Parliament in Scotland is far more civilized in terms of how to deal with the public and the guided tours are also very good. In Wales there is a whole lot to be learned regarding visitors.
