Russell Square, London

4.2
#344 of 3,692 in Things to do in London
Russell Square is a large garden square in Bloomsbury, in the London Borough of Camden, built predominantly by the firm of James Burton. It is near the University of London's main buildings and the British Museum. Almost exactly square, to the north is Woburn Place and to the south-east is Southampton Row. Russell Square tube station sits to the north-east.
It is named after the surname of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford; the freehold remains with the latter's conservation trusts who have agreed public access and management by Camden Council. The gardens are in the mainstream, initial category (of Grade II listing) on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
In 2005, two terrorist bombings occurred in this heart of Bloomsbury zone; one on a tube train between Kings Cross St Pancras and Russell Square, the other on a bus on Tavistock Square. In condolence and commemoration the public and public institutions laid flowers at both squares; Tavistock Square has a later monument. In 2016 the Russell Square stabbing took place.
The square is the largest of the two centremost postcodes (prefixed WC and EC).

  • Lovely and pleasant fountain park on a lovely summer day in Bloomsbury. Good for a short relaxing moment here.  more »
  • This park provides shelter for many legal professionals in the area during the lunch time, and for students from universities nearby. The park has a good cafe, fountain, and large open space...  more »

  • Russell Square is one of my all time favourite green spaces in Central London. With its four quarters of green space, central fountain, wisteria arch and cafe, you can spend a wonderful afternoon with friends and spend the day eating, drinking and kicking the footy around. Summertime is so popular though that the extra foot traffic kills off the grass and leaves a dust bowl. Springtime is usually best to see this place at its best!
  • Massive and beautiful landscape within the city centre of London surrounded by number of hotels and university. It is a nice place to relax with friends or loved ones. It is not usually crowded. It is well maintained and very close to Russell Square London underground station possibly named after it. Trees provide good shades during summer and makes it an idle place to chill out and have fun
