Founded in 1857, Science Museum is one of the city’s major attractions, with nearly three million visitors each year. The museum holds an impressive collection of over 300,000 items, including the first jet engine, the oldest surviving steam locomotive, and the first prototype of the famous Clock of the Long Now, a mechanical clock designed to keep time for over 10,000 years. See hundreds of interactive exhibits, or visit the IMAX 3-D movie theater, which screens science and nature documentaries. Visit the Exploring Space gallery to see the story of human space exploration or time your trip for a "Science Night," a regular all-night special event allowing guests to spend the night inside the galleries, sleeping among the exhibits. It was free like most museums in London, and it was amazing. I specifically enjoyed the Space section and loved how there were so many interactive installations there which give you a dynamic experience. The museum has several different sections each dedicated to movement (cars, engines planes), space, medicine etc. It's a great experience to be able to see the evolution of human life through the evolution of science. It's usually crowded on weekends, so go in the morning and weekdays.
It's reputation is well earned. There is a good mix between adult and child learning. Lots on interactive parts and areas on intricate detail. It's huge so give yourself a day to have a good look around. Free entry and no-one is pushing you to buy stuff. Near the tube, well worth a trip.
