Providing interactive insight into everyday life under socialism, DDR Museum is in the former governmental district of East Germany. The hands-on exhibits show how ordinary people lived in East Germany between the end of World War II and the German reunification in 1990. The displays, which include various covert listening devices, are meant to give visitors the sense of always being under surveillance. This private museum opened in 2006 and has since been nominated for several prestigious awards. Keep in mind that this relatively small site gets quite crowded. Try to visit earlier in the day to avoid masses of tourists. Arrange to visit DDR Museum and other attractions in Berlin using our Berlin day trip site.

Spent a great couple of hours seeing the history of Berlin. Some great artifacts to see and a chance to get hands on. Highly recommend.

Really nice and informative museum. Kids enjoyed the interactive parts of the museum and they were very engaged during their stay. It can be a bit overwhelming with all the information about the history, and at least for us we were missing some structure as how to approach all of this information. However it didn’t affect our whole impression of the museum.

If you are curious about the old East Germany, you should definitely see it. You should see how life was, how propaganda was. The museum design is very good. Interactive screens come out of the cabinets and drawers. The simulation of driving around the streets of Germany is nice, but I wish the old technology would do VR or something. Be sure to see it. If you have a Berlin card, you can travel at a discount.
