Don't miss the highlight of Romisch-Germanisches Museum: an 1,800-year old mosaic of the god Dionysus. The artwork, crafted from millions of ceramic tiles, is--amazingly--completely intact. Throughout the museum's three floors, you'll see hundreds of artifacts from the Roman colonization of the Rhine Valley. Various dioramas offer details about daily life and religion in Roman Germania. The exhibits are laid out to resemble the inner courtyard of a Roman villa. As you walk around, you'll see that the museum was built around the discovery of the mosaic. Be sure to pay a visit to the restored stretch of ancient road just outside the building. It’s a pity the current exhibit is just an abridged version as the original museum near the cathedral is closed for renovation. Nonetheless, it did an excellent job in presenting the Roman artifacts of the Germania. Do not miss it if you are interested in the Roman Empire. Be cautious that you will be under close surveillance of the staff whose gaze made me so self-conscious.
