Local mythology claims Rock of Cashel, a limestone hill crowned by a group of medieval buildings, came into existence when Saint Patrick banished Satan from a cave in a nearby mountain. Kings of Munster lived here for several centuries before the Norman invasion, adding structures to fortify their hilltop seat of power. Little structural evidence of that time remains, as the oldest building still standing on the rock is a round tower constructed sometime in the 12th century. Next to the tower stands a Romanesque chapel, Gothic cathedral, and a 15th century castle. Before you stroll here from the town of Cashel, check the website for a downloadable leaflet providing a brief history and a map of this historical site. • This is one of the key landmarks in Ireland. Dating back approximately 900 years, much of the structure is a ruin. But it is a very impressive ruin. It is also one of the most imposing spectacles...

  • I strongly suggest you pay the extra to go inside the Cathedral, its not much and you learn a ton about the unique sandstone building and the various people who influenced its creation. Exploring...

  • Stunning views are afforded from the high hilltop on which the castle sits. The castle itself is wonderful, and I would recommend the guided tour to anyone wishing to learn more about Irish history. A place where myth and fact merge and create something unique and enduring.
  • Lovely castle and amazing views of surrounding countryside and town. We stopped off for a visit on our way home from Cork to Dublin and very glad we did. Would definitely visit again.
