The 15th largest church in the world, Basilica di San Petronio is the main place of worship of Bologna. The basilica has been home to the sacred relics of its namesake since 2000, but its claim to fame is its history of sacred instrumental and choral music. Two grand organs installed in 1476 and 1596 often fill the main chapel with music. In the 17th century, astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini designed a sundial that's in the paved ground outside the basilica on the left. At 66.8 m (219 ft), it is the longest sundial in the world. • Beautiful basilica in Piazza Maggiore with an amazing history. It's free and closed for a few hours in the middle of the day.

  • Unfortunately I was not allowed inside because my shorts were too short. I have no problem with churches imposing a dress code. When I walked up the stairs to the Basilica there was an extremely rude lady at the door with two guards. She looked at me and pointed at my shorts and just said ‘too short!!’. I waited there to see what other people would do. To my astonishment she started making exceptions for certain people. When I went up to her and asked why, she said that sometimes it was OK to make exceptions. Then she started making fun of me with the two guards in Italian. She had no idea I understand Italian perfectly. It is a pity that such people are chosen to represent a religious temple. It only reflects badly on the church as such people only push people away.
  • All women need to cover based on the standard of a man in the front of the church, even a little bit of not covered legs is a problem, the man is very strict and basically asking a tax. It is the middle if the summer and it's very hot. So they will offer an affordable 1 euro piece of paper to cover the body of sinning women. Welcome back to 1500.
