Matera — 5 nights

Subterranean City

Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Get some cultural insight at Gravina in Puglia - Cattedrale and Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis. Step off the beaten path and head to Chiesa del Purgatorio and Cattedrale di Conversano. Get out of town with these interesting Matera side-trips: Castello Svevo di Barletta (in Barletta), Gravina in Puglia (Gravina Sotterranea & Laboratorio della Cola Cola - La Casa della Cola Cola) and Cattedrale Maria SS. Assunta (in Bitonto). There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Antica Matera Casa Grotta, appreciate the extensive heritage of Centro Storico, make a trip to Centro storico di Altamura, and pause for some serene contemplation at Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio detta del Purgatorio.
